Quaker Bridge Lift Galore: July 2022

Lift Galore Date: July 31

Lift Adventure Time: 5:00 PM EST

After almost 2 years of knowing about Quaker Bridge Mall, it was sure quite a fun idea to film lifts at this shopping centre. This shopping centre is unique as it has two traction lifts & two hydraulic lifts despite having only 2 floors & being one of the smallest indoor >1 level shopping centres throughout the state. For this lift galore, the following were filmed:

  • Kone EcoDisc

  • Schindler 3300

  • Old Otis

  • Old Dover

Each of the 4 lifts had their own charm & flair to them, which made the trip more interesting. Each of the 4 lifts were filmed in sequential order, starting from the J.C.Penney side of the shopping centre & working my way towards the food court side of the shopping centre. Research on each lift was conducted prior to filming them.

Old Dover

Time Filmed: Afternoon (July 23)

Grade: B+

Speed to Height Ratio: 4.6:1

Landings Served: 2

The first lift was at J.C.Penney & was a large scale vintage Dover lift which got a slap on mod with Innovation Universal by Montgomery Kone around 25 years ago. The fixtures lit up in 'amber' & it had an ADA compliant phone installed on the panel itself. It had smooth starts & stops going down, but rough & immediate starts going up. The cab itself was a bit plain but slightly grotty. The fluorescent lights added a nice touch, though. Given the general priority situation the speed was normal (between the bounds of 4:1 & 6:1). The speed to height ratio was 4.6:1 & the speed is estimated to be around 0.35 m/s.

Outstanding characterful elements included a rough & abrupt start going up & a normal speed to height ratio. The doors were particularly violent/rough opening & closing & the motor had a nice hum to it going up. The position of the motor was on the upper terminal landing. Upon analyzing the character of the lift & the efficiency analysis, I decided to assign a grade of "B+" to this lift.

Kone EcoDisc

Time Filmed: Afternoon (July 23)

Grade: C

Speed to Height Ratio: 10:1

Landings Served: 2

The second lift was the main lift at Quaker Bridge Mall. It was a small Kone EcoDisc lift with KSS 500 fixtures, replacing a 1980's Montgomery Vector hydraulic lift. The first floor button lit up in the original orange fixture while the second floor button got replaced with a white fixture. The cab itself was a bit plain, but it had a side-opening door instead of a center-opening door, which made it slightly more interesting. Given the general priority situation the speed was fast (beyond 6:1). The speed to height ratio was 10:1 & the speed is 0.75 m/s.

There were no outstanding characterful elements with this lift. Upon analyzing the character of the lift & the efficiency analysis, I decided to assign a grade of "C" to this lift.

Old Otis

Time Filmed: Afternoon (July 23)

Grade: B+

Speed to Height Ratio: 4.7:1

Landings Served: 2

The third lift was at Macy's & was a vintage OTIS lift which got a slap-on mod with EPCO CircleLine around 30 years ago. The fixtures lit up in white & it had an ADA compliant phone installed on the panel itself. It had semi-rough starts & stops going in both directions. The cab itself was original from when the lift was installed. The fluorescent lights with the ceiling pattern added a bit of flair. Given the general priority situation the speed was normal (between the bounds of 4:1 & 6:1). The speed to height ratio was 4.7:1 & the speed is 0.35 m/s.

Outstanding characterful elements included semi-rough starts & stops going in both directions with a normal speed to height ratio. The motor wasn't very audible but it had a noticeably long leveling time towards the ground floor landing. It had epic predoors along with violent slamming doors. Upon analyzing the character of the lift & the efficiency analysis, I decided to assign a grade of "B+" to this lift.

Schindler 3300

Time Filmed: Afternoon (July 23)

Grade: D-

Speed to Height Ratio: 8.4:1

Landings Served: 2

The final lift was at Forever 21 & was a small Schindler MRL lift installed not long ago. The fixtures are made of glass & light up in red with the exception of the alarm button which lights up in amber. The cab itself had a very European feel to it. Given the general priority situation the speed was medium fast. The speed to height ratio was 8.4:1 & the speed is estimated to be 0.63 m/s.

There were no outstanding characterful elements with this lift. Upon analyzing the character of the lift & the efficiency analysis, I decided to assign a grade of "D-" to this lift.

I look forward to seeing you on the premiere at 5:00 PM EST this afternoon.
