Paramus Lift Galore: June 2022

Writer's picture: LAHTO's Lift Filming AcademyLAHTO's Lift Filming Academy

Lift Galore Date: June 17

Lift Galore Time: 5:00 PM EST

It's been a long time since I've last filmed lifts in person, a whole whopping half a year to be exact. I'm excited to be back, but not for long, since I have to finish up my time at Kean University & focus on graduating on time. But for the mean time, let's enjoy our summer recess, film the best lifts we can film & make the most of it!

Westinghouse Lift

Where: Macy's, Garden State Plaza

Time Filmed: 10:10 AM (June 10)

Grade: B+

Speed to Height Ratio: 8.1:1 (Fast)

Landings Served: 3

The first lift of this lift galore is a 1950's Westinghouse lift which was later modernised by a generic company between the 1980's & early 2000's with EPCO Flushline fixtures on the outside, EPCO Circleline fixtures on the inside. This lift has a speed to height ratio of 8.1:1 which makes it fast for the application & number of landings. This lift is located in the Macy's store of the Garden State Plaza shopping centre in Paramus & is the second fastest lift in the shopping centre in terms of both absolute speed & the speed to height ratio. It travels at an absolute speed of 250 fpm.

Outstanding characterful elements include an unusually large cab with dim, vintage style lighting, dark wooden walls & no handrails. The center opening 2-speed doors on top of it being geared traction serving only 3 landings is a major plus & makes the configuration of the lift rare for its kind. The only other example within a 100 mile radius is the Macy's store at Roosevelt Field in Garden City, NY. Upon analyzing the character of the lift & the efficiency analysis, I decided to assign a grade of "B+" to this lift. The long leveling times at each landing do a good job at compensating for the unjustly high speed to height ratio.

Kone Lift

Where: 747 Route 17 N

Time Filmed: 10:55 AM (June 10)

Grade: B+

Speed to Height Ratio: 5.9:1 (Slightly fast)

Landings Served: 3

The final lift of this lift galore is a 2010's Kone lift which completely replaced a Schindler MT 300A lift due to reliability issues & constant downtime. Part of what makes this lift so rare is how it's configured. To start off, it's a pure hospital-sized lift with a glassback cab on the outside of an existing structure where the architecture of the building is weird itself. On top of it, it's a traction lift (not a hydraulic) & it has Innovation Universal fixtures as opposed to Kone KSS. It has a loud motor with a very loud clunking brake which adds character to the ride. This lift has a speed to height ratio of 5.9:1 which makes it slightly fast for the application & number of landings. This lift is located in a strip mall on Route 17 North not far from Westfield Garden State Plaza. It travels at an absolute speed of 200 fpm.

I look forward to seeing you on the premiere at 5:00 PM EST this afternoon.
